Catalog2 publishedOne page at a time

How things work, one mechanism at a time.

Interactive 3D models of machines and instruments. Turn the object, take it apart, and follow the part that does the job.

Every Mechanism is a workshop for taking things apart. Each page is one object, modelled in Blender. The parts are named, and the writing stays in plain language: what the piece is, what moves, and what that changes.

You can orbit the model, split it open, and try the motion yourself. New pages are added one at a time. Everything already published stays in the catalog below.

In the catalog now: How a Trombone Works and How a Carburetor Works.

What a page lets you do

  1. Turn the model

Drag to orbit it and scroll to look closer. The mesh is the same one built for the page in Blender.

  2. Take it apart

Separate the pieces and see which part is which, instead of guessing from a single photograph.

  3. Try the motion

Move the slide, the throttle, or whatever actually does the work, then read why that movement matters.

Published mechanisms, in the order they went up.

  1. 01Brass instrument

    How a Trombone Works

No valves and no keys. Buzzing lips, a loop of brass, and a slide that changes how long the air column is.

  2. 02Engine

    How a Carburetor Works

No computer and no fuel injectors. Air rushing through a narrow throat pulls petrol up out of the float bowl.
